Arrangements for Academic Guidance

Undergraduate and Graduate Programs

Before the beginning of each academic year, academic advisors who are lecturers from the relevant departments are assigned by the administrative boards of faculties, schools and vocational schools by reviewing the suggestions of the heads of department in order to provide students with solutions for the problems they might encounter during enrollment and study. Academic advisors monitor students during the course of their studies and guide and acquaint them with the regulations of the associate/undergraduate degree programs. Enrollment, add-drop and withdrawal procedures are approved by the advisor.

Master’s and Doctoral Programs
Appointment of Thesis Advisor
  1. The thesis advisor is appointed with input from the head of department/arts division and the student and a decision is made by the administrative board of the revelant institute by yhe end of second semesterat the latest.
  2. The thesis advisor is elected from among the professors / lecturers with PhD degrees or from, among the lecturers whose qualities are specified by the Senate in divisions of arts.
  3. TWhere more than one thesis advisor is necessary, a second thesis advisor can be appointed through suggestion of the heads of departments/arts divisions and the decision of the administrative board of the institute. In doctoral programs offered jointly with universities abroad, the advisor appointed by the other university is also accepted as the second advisor.
  4. The thesis advisor shall be altered upon the request of the student, the board of the relevant department/ arts division,or the advisor and a decision will be made by the administrative board.
  5. In the case of the advisor’s retirement, appointment to another post, resignation due to illness or other reasons or in the case of the declaration to the institute by the head of department that the advisor cannot or will fulfill his/her task of advising, a new advisor shall be appointed.
  6. Selection of and enrollment in the courses are made by the advisor. Until the appointment of the advisor, guidance is offered by the heads of the related departments/ arts divisions.
  7. Within the advisor’s flex days, documents to be approved in due time are approved by the heads of related departments/ arts divisions and delivered to the institute in a timely manner.
  8. The head of the department/arts division approves and submits the thesis subject and program proposal prepared by the student and the advisor to the institute at the beginning of the following semester by registration week at the latest. The thesis subject becomes definite with the decision of the board of the institute. In any cases of alteration of the thesis subject, the same process is applied.
  9. The thesis advisor prepares a program including the stages of research and study for the student. The advisor evaluates the thesis study by preparing a progress report at the end of each stage of the study and informs the Directorate about whether or not the thesis is successful. Apart from the aforementioned guidance, students are supported by the Psychological Counseling and Guidance Research and Application Center, the Centre for Career Planning and the Centre for Continuing Education affiliated with the Rectorate.
